Partial Knee Replacement

Also known as: UKA, Uni-knee, Unicompartmental knee replacement

Dr. Nadaud performs over 100 partial knee replacements every year. He prefers to offer this procedure for appropriate candidates. While total knee replacement is a very successful operation, partial knee replacement is the least invasive joint replacement procedure. It is less traumatic and delivers improved results for pain relief. Additionally, it can be performed on an outpatient basis. Partial knee replacement utilizes a smaller incision than the total knee, requires much less cutting of the bone, and does not cut muscle or disrupt the quad muscle or tendon (unlike the quad sparing technique).

This procedure carries lower risk than TKA, involves less pain, and has a faster recovery with an easier rehabilitation. Most people find that it feels more natural than TKA due to retaining more of the natural anatomy. For those interested in sports, it enables a faster and more likely return to vigorous activity. 80-90% of partial knee replacements are expected to last beyond 20 years, which is similar to the durability of total knee replacement. For very young patients, this is an excellent option for obtaining pain relief and delaying the need for a total knee arthroplasty. In fact, many patients who have undergone a partial knee replacement will never need a total knee replacement.

Total Knee Replacement

Also known as: Tka, Total Knee Arthroplasty

With 24 years of experience, Dr. Nadaud performs hundreds of minimally-invasive total knee procedures each year using minimally-invasive techniques and the most proven approaches to achieve ideal outcomes and minimize risk. While some surgeons market procedures that have demonstrated increased risks, Dr. Nadaud’s priority is always achieving optimal results while avoiding complications. As with all of our procedures, we use multimodal pain management and accelerated recovery after anesthesia (ERAS) protocols to optimize patient comfort and allow rapid mobilization and same-day discharge to home when possible. Approximately 85% of our total knee patients are able to participate in our outpatient program and go home the day of surgery. The majority of our patients never require a hospital stay and have their surgery performed at our award-winning outpatient surgery center, KOSC.
